Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
